Vern's new love....PA-12

Vern got his new love! (I am pretty sure I cost less though)
This is what he has to say about it!

So this is the skinny on the new bird. It is a 1947 Piper PA-12 with a 150 HP motor. It has been heavily modified for Alaska flying. It has had the following done: Pa18 (Supercub) flaps were installed (PA-12’s didn’t come with flaps), PA18 extended landing gear with Atlee Dodge safety cables replaced the stock gear, PA18 tail feathers were put on to replace the stock ones and the stock trim system, Borer prop installed (for short take off and landings), 31” Alaskan Bush Wheels with the Baby Bush Tail Wheel replaced the stock tires, Scott 3200 Tail wheel with wide fork installed (to accommodate the large tail wheel), High pressure brake boosters and new Cleveland brakes were installed to accommodate the now larger wheels and slow the huge tires down while landing, Droop tips on the wings were installed to reduce the stall speed, Extended upper and lower baggage compartment installed for all the Alaska survival gear, lifetime struts installed, skylight installed for light in cabin, and some other small stuff. The result of all this is a 3 place (fat) Supercub. It is hard to tell the difference now between my PA-12 and a PA-18 (Supercub). The fuselage is a little wider (on the PA-12), the wings are just a little different between the two, and the control surfaces vary a little between them, but that is about it. I will have the annual inspection completed soon and then the lessons begin!!! After that I just have a few more small modifications to do and it will be done (I want to lighten it up a little with some trick parts). I just have to get Monica a new parachute so she will fly with me!!!!!!! She just will not except the blue tarp and string for a parachute...HAHAHAHA

You have your own airplane and you haven't even gotten your pilot's license......I'm jealous! Take a hopper trip down to see us and take me for a fly! That's a sweet one....my grandpa has a 40s Aeronica Chief that I'd love to have someday...other than I don't have a clue about flying taildraggers and the footing is backwards...not to mention it's got no radio for communications. Luckily we'll be moving to a smaller town without a tower! Maybe someday....like when you have a baby and I have a plane for my new baby.

SO HAPPY FOR YOU GUYS!! Now, the baby is next, right?!! Thanks for the pictures . . . sweet plane even though I don't know a thing about them . . . I do know it has to be one of the best if Vern bought it!! Have a fun weekend and hopefully we can all get together SOON!!

Yeah,I am starting my instruction at the local airport with no tower!!!I agree with you Ashli, the less traffic the better. I have a radio but it is still a "1940's" panel with the bare bones minimum. That Chief is a sweet plane, I have looked at a couple up here. The sweet thing with it is it just sips the fuel...more hours behind the stick!! I hope that someday I can fly down to the states for a vacation, hopefully you have got your license then!! It would be cool to meet somewhere in the middle and see some places. I guess I better concentrate on the baby now before Mon goes off the deep end!!!

Grady said that you will not be flying high enough for the parachute to do any good for Monica, so save the money for the baby! You may want to have your license completed BEFORE she's too pregnant...that's when I worried about going off the deep end myself!
