Moose Hunting.....Successful

We just got back from 5 days of hunting. Well I Did. Vern has been hunting for two weeks. We didn't go to the same place though. He was with his dad and brothers, and brother-in-laws, and I was with my parents, my brother Jake and some good friends of our Dean and Cyndie. The weather was horrible. It rained everyday on us, but we got one short break of no rain, and some moose.

It was the first time I had ever shot a moose or any large animal for that matter, and what an AWESOME experience. I am so bummed Vern wasn't their but it was great to be there with my parents and Dean.

We pulled it the swamp and saw the moose, they were running away from us and Dean called and the one turned around and Dean got a look at it and it was legal so he yelled at me to get my gun. I was in such "AW" i didn't hear him the first time so he did have to tell me twice. I jacked in a shell and got to the front of the 6 wheeler, and he kept telling me to wait cause it was coming closer, and then he said get a rest so i just leaned back into the 6 wheeler, got the moose in the scope and pulled the trigger. I went to jack in another shell to follow-up and i didn't need to the moose was DOWN! YEAH!

Me and my moose. Dean put blood on my cheek!

Me and Dad with my moose

Then Dad suggested that we go into the woods and look because there was some good sign, so Dean and I took off one way and mom and dad took off another way. We decided that we would meet back at my moose in 30 minutes and get to work on that if we didn't see anything else. well our 30 minutes were up and Dean and I were walking back to the moose and the six-wheeler, thrashing thru the trees, not being very quiet at all, and we both stopped to look at this hill and about 50 yards away was this moose. It is one of those things where we both looked at each other because we didn't believe what we were seeing. This moose was huge. I noticed it had three brow-tines and Dean looked at the other side and he had for so Dean shot him. He dropped and then i saw him get back up. So we had to follow the blood trail about 1/4 mile and there he was laying under a tree. It was amazing. What a RUSH!

Dean and I with his moose.
I am hooked on hunting now!!!!
Dean thinks Vern need to call me "THE PROVIDER" for the year!!! HAHA
Well off to clean -up muddy and wet everything. The rain was no fun, but the hunt was a blast!

WOW! I've never really thought of you as the hunter type or the provider. Does this post mean that Vern didn't get anything? My heart was pounding just reading about it. Good job Monica!

No Vern did not get a moose, but I did smoke a brown bear. I am just so proud of my wife for killing a moose. About 3 weeks ago she had never killed anything, and then she shot a grouse with her new .22. Now she is mister Davey Crocket!!! I couldn't be luckier to have a wife excited about hunting, which is my addiction!! I worked many hours working up a hand load for her gun that would not kick to much but would get the job done, but still have the velocity that you need for big game. Apparently the load worked! Now we can work up to some HOT LOADS for her. I was just worried about the recoil. Just to let you know, the 140 grain Nosler Accubond held 82% after they recovered the bullet and after I weighed it on a scale. That is not great, but pretty good with reduced velcocity loads. I have to say that she never shot the gun after I worked up a load for it. I just told her before I left that It will get it done with the cross hairs on it from "too close" all the way up to 200 yards, and I shot about 150 rounds through it to make sure!! I guess she was listening for once!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love you babe, and I am way proud of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are these pictures of the bear? PLease tell me that you got some to share with us southern folks. I am way impressed with Monica's hunting too! Not something that I ever really gave any thought to.
